Horary Consultations

Background

The basic premise of astrology is that anything born or done at a moment in time shares the quality of that moment. Natal astrology takes this principle and applies it to the event of the birth of an individual under the premise that the configuration of the planets at the moment of a person's birth have something significant to say about the nature and course of their life. Horary takes this notion of temporal moments of origin and applies it in a more abstract sense to the birth of a question.

Definition

Interrogational astrology, also known as horary astrology, is the practice of determining the answers to specific questions through the examination and interpretation of a horoscopic chart cast for the moment that a question is posed to an astrologer.  The theory is that since the question exists and is formulated and posed at a specific moment in time, then the answer must also exist at that moment and this answer is reflected by the alignment of certain celestial bodies in a horoscopic chart cast for that point in time.  By following a very specific set of rules and adhering to the logic that is inherent in the system the answer to the question is sought to be derived primarily, if not exclusively, based upon the chart of the question itself.

Example Horary Question: Will I get the job?

General guidelines for posing horary questions

  • The question must be important to the person asking it. This statement has two meanings. The first is that in order for a horary question to work the question must have real, serious, mental or emotional meaning to the person who is asking it. Trivial matters do not make for good horary questions. Really it is best if the person asking the question is so consumed by the question and needs it answered badly enough that they are not really so much invested in the outcome of it either way, but more so that they just need to know the answer even if it doesn’t work out the way that they would prefer. A good horary question is one that has been eating away at a person for at least a night and a day, so much so that by the time it is presented to the astrologer it has fully matured and can be articulated very precisely. The other meaning to the above rule is that a horary question has to have great importance to the questioner him/herself in a personal way, and therefore questions should not be asked for other people, or about other people's business unless it has direct personal meaning to the person asking. Some would object to this rule, and in certain cases there are exceptions, but in general I ask that this be followed pretty closely by my clients.
  • The question must be answerable. This seems pretty self-explanatory. The question must be verifiable. Horary doesn’t do very well with most spiritual questions concerning karma, or reincarnation, theology and other such things like speculative history and philosophy for example. For example, "what is the meaning of life" is not a legitimate horary question.
  • The question can only be asked once. This is a pretty generally accepted rule for most mantic arts such as Tarot and the I-Ching, as well as many others. The only possible exception being that if a great deal of time has passed and circumstances have changed significantly since the last time you asked the question, then it may be permissible to ask the question again in light of the new circumstances.
  • Only one question at a time. This is also a pretty simple and generally accepted rule. At any given horary consultation only one question may be asked at that time. Part of the reason being that this ensures that the one question asked is of the utmost importance to the querent, and it increases the probability that the moment in which the question is asked is indeed a 'true' horary moment.

Phrasing the question

Horary can be much more specific and precise than natal astrology, which can be both good and bad in certain instances. While it is very good at answering specific questions like “will I get the job”, its not very good at asking broader ranging questions such as "what kind of a career am I best suited for?" Most horary questions should be answerable with a straight forward yes or no response. When phrasing a horary question the precise wording of it is very important, and somewhat ambiguous words like the word ‘should’ are not supposed to be used if you wish to receive a clear answer to the question.

For example "should I take the job offer?" would not be an appropriate horary question because whether or not the job 'should' be taken is ambiguous and involves some sort of subjective value judgement about the quality of the job and its appropriateness for you, presumably. A more appropriate horary question is "will I get the job" because it has a straightforward yes or no answer which can be depicted in a horoscopic chart with much less ambiguity.

The question answered by the horary chart is always the one that is posed to the astrologer exactly as it is phrased, so it is good to think about your question quite a bit beforehand and to phrase it very precisely.

Not sure if your question is appropriate for horary?

Many people that are unfamiliar with horary sometimes have a hard time determining if they have a legitimate horary question to ask. A good way to figure this out is to determine if your question has any association with one of the 12 houses of a horoscopic chart that astrologers use to assign topics to areas of life. The following is a list of the 12 houses and some of the topics that are associated with each house, as well as a few relevant examples of past horary questions.

  • 1st house: life, body, breath, the basic physical constitution of the native.
  • 2nd house: material objects, possessions, money, things that the native owns in general.
  • 3rd house: siblings, travel, being abroad, education, etc.
  • 4th house: home, parents, city, family, residence, etc.
  • 5th house: children, pregnancy, sex, gambling, etc.
    • "Am I pregnant?"
  • 6th house: illness, injuries, enemies, work, your job, etc.
    • Example: "is my rib broken?"
    • "Will I get the job?"
  • 7th house: relationships, marriage, partner, other people in general, etc.
    • "Will ___ and I ever be in a committed relationship?"
  • 8th house: death, the money or possessions of other people, inheritance, benefits from death, etc.
    • "Is _____ dead?"
  • 9th house: foreign countries, travel, religious matters, philosophy, astrology, higher education, foreigners, etc.
    • "Will I get accepted into the university?"
  • 10th house: career, what one does, social standing, reputation, superiors, etc.
  • 11th house: friends, associates, groups, social movements, gifts from superiors, etc.
    • "Is my friend safe?"
  • 12th house: loss, enemies, jail, dangers, etc.

Consultation Mediums

In order to serve a diverse client base I utilize a number of different mediums through which to conduct consultations and each client has a choice of choosing the one that best suits them. Usually a horary consultation consists of a written report which gives the answer to the question as well as a detailed rationale that explains why I came to that conclusion regarding the question. Clients also have the option of setting up an appointment to speak with me about the question through one of the mediums listed below if they want to do so, although often times it is not necessary once the written report is sent out. Most discussions regarding horary questions last about 30 minutes. The price for a horary consultation is $40. Please email me the question regardless of which medium you decide to use for the consultation. Here is a list of some of the different consultation mediums:

  • Written report - The usual medium for horary consultations is doing a written report which answers the question and outlines the astrological rationale behind the answer. These reports are usually about a page to two pages long and negate the need to meet up to discuss the question through one of the other mediums.
  • Over the phone - Telephone consultations are the preferred medium if a written report is not sufficient. Consultations over the phone last for approximately 30 minutes, and prior to the consultation you will be emailed a detailed writeup of the notes that I have taken for the consultation along with any relevant charts and handouts in PDF format. Contact me at astrologue@gmail.com to check for availability and to schedule an appointment. For those outside of the U.S. where the costs associated with making a long-distance call are prohibitive, other means of holding a phone consultation are available, such as through internet voice chat programs such as Skype. Contact me for more information.
  • Instant messenger - The consultation may take place over an instant messenger program at a scheduled date and time. Consultation notes and relevant charts will be emailed prior to the consultation. Consultations held through an instant messenger program usually for approximately 30 minutes or so. Currently available instant messenger services for this option are: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and Google Talk.
  • In person - Consultations may be done in person if you happen to live in Colorado, or if you book a consultation with me ahead of time while I am travelling. Please see my bio page for my current travel schedule and a list of my upcoming appearances. Consultations in person usually last for about 30 minutes, and they come with a written report of the consultation notes which will be emailed to you in PDF form prior to the consultation.
  • Second Life - A new medium for consultations is to meet at my office in the virtual world called Second Life. The Second Life program is free, and it provides a more personal setting for a consultation when it is not possible to meet in person. Please be sure that you download Second Life and determine if your computer can run the program before booking an appointment for a consultation with me there. Consultations in Second Life last for approximately 30 minutes, and prior to the consultation you will be emailed a writeup of the notes that I have taken for the consultation along with any relevant charts and handouts in pdf form. Communication is done either through typing or, more preferably, through the SL talk feature using a microphone. Contact me through my email address which is astrologue@gmail.com if you have any questions or to inquire about scheduling an appointment.

Question refusal disclaimer

There are certain instances where I will reserve the right not to accept a question based on certain indicators in the chart, or if the question being posed simply isn't a proper horary question. There are numerous possible reasons for a rejected question ranging from suspicions about the validity of the question to occasional instances where the legality of the question seems questionable. Sometimes the question posed simply isn't a proper horary question, or is broader than the narrow scope that is answerable through this specific application of astrology. In all occasions I will notify you of my decision as well as the reason for rejecting the question, and then from there probably suggest what could be done, and either no payment will be accepted or there will be a full refund unless further work is requested.

Contact information and payment

The fee for horary consultations is $40 per question. I ask that you send me an email at Chris Brennan at astrologue@gmail.com with the question and, as is often necessary, any background information that is needed to understand context of the question. The answer to the question along with any additional information that the chart may provide will be sent to you by email upon reciept of payment, and if you would like to discuss the matter further in a 30 minute consultation then we can schedule a meeting at that point. The preferred payment method is through PayPal using the 'buy now' button below. If you would like to meet in person in order to get the results, then please let me know what your general availability will be during the coming week and then we can schedule an appointment from there. Finally, as stated above, please ask the question very precisely and clearly in your email, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

How do I pay?

Payment is handled through PayPal when the consultation is scheduled by using one of the 'buy now' buttons located on this page. Please contact me at astrologue@gmail.com to confirm the consultation and to set up an appointment before paying for it through PayPal.

Paypal is a very easy and secure method of transferring funds over the internet. As part of the ordering process you will be directed to the Paypal website for payment. If you do not already have an account with Paypal then you will be given the option of opening an account with them or making a secure payment using your existing credit card. Both services are free to use and they allow you to send money from your bank account to anyone with an email address in over 40 countries.
